Bicycle
Safety Programs Neighborhood Pride is a team effort by Bicycle safety and the proper use of a helmet are a major part of teaching neighborhood children the importance of safety practices through education, information, interactive activities, incentives and peer reinforcement. Bicycle helmets are fitted and distributed to each elementary student and the classroom education utilizes components of the international Think First for Kids curricula. The bicycle helmets are provided by the Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Columbus and Central Ohio ThinkFirst and fitted properly by members of Safe Kids Central Ohio. A safety poster contest is initiated in grades 3 to 5 and the winner from each grade is awarded a brand new bicycle donated by Safe Kids Central Ohio. The posters are then transformed into injury prevention coloring books and redistributed to each student in the school. The injury prevention coloring books are created and distributed by The Ohio State University Medical Center, Trauma Program. The final day of the weeklong activities includes a bicycle safety festival where students can practice the safety tips they have learned. A few of the stations include Columbus Parks & Recreations bicycle course for each student to safely ride through on a bike, Columbus Division of Fires Smoke House which teaches them what to do in case of a fire, Columbus Division of Police are there reminding the students to be aware of their surroundings, stranger danger and safely crossing the streets.
